Thoughts on Hungarian Vizsla was created by Neverathome stayhomemum
Hiya
We are looking at getting a deer dog for a hunting dog and a family pet, and just wondered if anyone has one? Any thoughts? Advice?
We have a lab already and had planned to get her in pup and keep one of her puppies, however, she is a fantastic hunter.... just not with deer! And it just started to get so expensive to breed from her... xrays, DNA testing, kennel registration etc etc
Looking forward to some comments!

all the ones I know are total goof balls. Loveable dogs but yes do tend to be very energetic and OTT; but then any gundog is prone to being like that! How they are for hunting will depend on the individual dog; I know some who are total wusses and are gun shy and hate it, others are as keen as anything; check the breeding and the individual pup for the attributes you're after, regardless of breed.
Owned by a standard poodle, a couple of burmese cats, a miniature horse, & a budgie.
Also proud mum to Caleb and Piper

We have a Lab X Vizsla purpose bred as a bird-dog. She is an incredibly soft natured lovable dog but is sometimes scared easily, but is great with guns and birds and has a real natural instinct. Excellent with kids and the family too.

Vizslas can be great workers - steadier than a GSP and more energetic than a lab - but make sure you buy from hunting lines. Bench or show bred dogs are less likely to have the drive and intensity you will want in a hunting dog. Vizslas are an excellent utility gun dog - tracking, pointing, flushing and retrieving - but be aware that if you are hunting through heavy cover or in very cold conditions that their short coats and low body fat give them little protection from injuries or cold. Some people use hunting vests for their dogs for these reasons.

3scoremiles, not all show bred dogs are equal
following from the Barat Vizsla Kennels
"My dogs happily go from sleeping on the bed ... to swimming the widest river .. to searching out feather or fur game ... to strutting their stuff in the show ring .. and back home to be lap dogs and loved pets! They have also successfully competed in agility, obedience and field trials."
