Hamburgers with Mushroom Gravy | Walking on Sunshine Recipes (1)

Today I'm sharing with you a recipe that I make quite often and finally remembered to take photos the last time we had this for dinner. Hamburgers with mushroom gravy is a recipe my family really enjoys for dinner and I really enjoy making because it is so easy!

I usually make the hamburgers in my cast iron grill pan and make the gravy in a separate cast iron pan. And then add the hamburgers to the other cast iron pan with the gravy to continue cooking and marry the flavors together.

Seems like a little extra work, but you can't beat the flavor of hamburgers cooked in a cast iron grill pan and you can't really make a good gravy with a grill pan.

This recipe has been updated since it first appeared in 2018 with new photos and a new printable recipe card that includes nutritional information. I hope you enjoy the updates as much as I enjoyed working on them!

I don't have jarred mushrooms, but fresh. I'm assuming that's ok, so I should saute the mushrooms first n olive oil or should it b made with jarred or canned?

Yes, I would cook the mushrooms for a little bit in some butter. Then once they're cooked, continue with the recipe to make the gravy. Thank you for visiting!

FAQs

What can you cook burgers on to get the juices to come out and form a crust as they congeal? ›

I prefer to cook burgers on a very hot cast iron frying pan or griddle because of the crust that forms, but if you don't have cast iron or you prefer the flavor of an outdoor grill, other pans and outdoor grills works great as well. Heat the frying pan until very hot over medium-high or high heat.

What temperature is hamburger steak done? ›

Check the patties with an instant-read thermometer to ensure the meat is cooked to the minimum safe temperature of 160 F.

What's the difference between Salisbury steak and hamburgers and gravy? ›

Salisbury steak traditionally calls for ground sirloin, which is a lean cut of beef known for its tenderness. On the other hand, hamburger steak can be made with pretty much any cut of beef, including chuck, round, or a bit of both. Ideally, cuts with slightly more fat content are used to retain moisture while cooking.

What is real gravy made from? ›

Gravy is a sauce often made from the juices of meats that run naturally during cooking and often thickened with corn starch or other thickeners for added texture.

What is the secret to juicy hamburgers? ›

Choose mince that is from the leg meat. The meat from these cuts has more fat, and it's therefore more flavourful and moist. You can also add finely chopped bacon to increase that juicy texture. Otherwise, using whole breast or thigh cuts of chicken instead of using mince can give you a juicier result.

What does baking soda do to hamburgers? ›

How Baking Soda Improves Ground Beef. Baking soda acts as a tenderizer for ground beef, keeps it moist during cooking, and encourages deep browning by raising the acidity level of the surface of the meat. Simply add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 pound of ground beef for more tender meat with better browning.

What to season burgers with? ›

Herbs: Parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary and oregano are favorites with beef, while mint, dill and cilantro are also popular with other proteins. Fresh herbs are excellent mixed into ground meat while dried herbs are the best choice for sprinkling on top.

How do you tell if a hamburger is done without a thermometer? ›

A rare burger will feel soft, like the fleshy area between your thumb and palm when your hand is flat. The more cooked the burger, the firmer it will feel. Press your thumb to your ring finger on one hand and feel that same part of your hand between the thumb and palm; that's what a medium burger should feel like.

When to flip a burger? ›

We do recommend letting the patty cook for at least 3 to 4 minutes before giving it a first flip, to give the meat time to sear. Otherwise, the patty may start to fall apart. After that, however, you can flip it once and be done, or flip it as often as you like, trying to get both sides to cook and brown evenly.

How do you know when burgers are done? ›

Color is not a reliable indicator of doneness, so the only way to be sure that hamburgers are cooked safely is to use a food thermometer. Ground beef is safe when cooked to an internal temperature of 160 °F as measured with a food thermometer.

What is beef gravy made of? ›

Ingredients & Cooking

1/4 cup butter. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour. 2 cups reduced-sodium beef broth. 1 teaspoon beef bouillon granules.

What part of the animal is gravy beef? ›

Gravy beef is a cut that comes from three main areas; the hind leg and the front leg (also known as shin) plus the neck area. It is rich in flavour and is traditionally used with the bone in for excellent stews and soups.

Is there a difference between brown gravy and beef gravy? ›

What is the difference between brown gravy and beef gravy? A brown gravy comes from any brown stock, whereas beef gravy always comes from beef stock specifically. In other words, all beef gravy is a brown gravy but not all brown gravy is beef gravy.

What is the difference between beef stock and beef gravy? ›

Gravy is an actual finished product. You might make it from stock, but it will have other things in it - seasoning, maybe flour to thicken it, you might reduce it down to make it less thin and concentrate the flavour… it is a finished sauce that you would serve with meat. You wouldn't give people just stock.
